About the Item

An early example of Portuguese modernist design, this small stool was produced by Fábrica Portugal in the 1930s and reflects the clean lines and functional spirit of the Bauhaus movement. The piece features a hand-shaped solid wood seat with a distinctive octagonal profile, mounted on a bold structure of continuous tubular steel legs—bent into graphic U-shapes that echo the forms popularized by Marcel Breuer and his contemporaries. Original maker's label “Fábrica Portugal” is still affixed to the frame, confirming its provenance. The stool is solid and well-built, with clear signs of age including oxidation on the chrome and marks on the seat—adding authentic patina that speaks to its nearly century-long life. Compact in scale yet sculptural in presence, this versatile piece works as a side stool, plant stand, or low table. A rare find from the early wave of industrial modernism in Portugal.
