Early 1900s Green Painted Wood & Metal Child’s Chair. This antique swivel chair is constructed of wood and cast iron. The chair features a simple, slightly curved back and a flat seat. The base is a distinctive cast iron pedestal with a flared foot. The chair is painted a faded green. The base is marked "W.G. SHATTUCK", "NO. 4" In 1854, East Boston resident William G. Shattuck, a chair dealer, established a factory for the manufacture of school furniture on the third of three mill sites. Workers produced wooden chair and desks parts sent to Boston for finishing, assembly, and sale. Shattuck’s school furniture was sold to school districts throughout the Boston area and as far away as Washington, D.C. Condition: The chair exhibits significant wear consistent with age and use. The paint is heavily chipped and faded, revealing bare wood in places. The wood shows signs of scratches and discoloration. The cast iron base has surface rust and some minor pitting.
