Japanese antique wooden Medicine drawer/1868-1920/MINGEI/Meiji-Taisho

About the Item

Introducing a cedar wood medicine chest (kusuri-dansu) made in Japan from the Meiji period to the early Showa period. These chests were originally used by pharmacies and Chinese medicine doctors, who stored ingredients for Chinese herbal medicines in small drawers. The neatly arranged drawers are visually beautiful as a rhythmic design, and the nearly square form, balanced both vertically and horizontally, is a true symbol of Japanese furniture culture, where functional beauty and formative beauty were fused together. The material used for this piece is Japanese cedar wood, which was commonly used in those days. The rustic atmosphere peculiar to Japanese cedar and the depth of the wood surface over the years create an atmosphere unique to antique furniture. The chest of drawers has been used over time and has become worn and scratched, all of which add to the “look” of this chest of drawers. There are 67 drawers in total. The handles are all in place, and the detailed workmanship suggests that this chest was once handled with care. There is still the distinctive aroma of Chinese medicine inside, and although some of the drawers show signs of insect infestation, no insect activity has been observed at this time and the condition is relatively good. Please see images for details. This medicine chest has an overwhelming presence not only as a storage furniture, but also as an interior decoration. It will be useful not only as a shelf for organizing small items, but also as a store fixture or a display stand. The depth unique to old furniture and the functionality provided by the detailed partitions blend naturally into modern spaces and provide a sense of nostalgia and security. This is a rare piece of furniture that is steeped in tradition and craftsmanship. Why not welcome this medicine chest into your daily life as the star of your space?
