About the Item

17th Century English Carved Oak Coffer with Foliate and Lozenge Panels A handsome 17th century English oak coffer, richly patinated and decorated with traditional period carving. The front features three recessed panels, the central one carved with a lozenge enclosing a stylised rosette, flanked by floral quatrefoil motifs with leafy sprays. Above, a lunette-carved frieze runs the full width beneath the overhanging twin-panel top. The lid opens to reveal a spacious interior, retaining its original panelled back and a lidded candle box to one side. Pegged construction throughout, with later iron strap hinges and an old lock replacement. A characterful and functional early piece with excellent colour and a timeworn surface. Wear, marks and minor losses consistent with age and use. Sound and usable. England, circa 1650. Dimensions: Width: 113 cm (44.5 in) Depth: 52.5 cm (20.7 in) Height: 60 cm (23.6 in)
