About the Item

Late 17th century 1680- 1700 , lovely deeply patinated leather exterior , created through centuries of polishing , handling and use , unpolished original patinated exterior metalwork, the interior still retaining its marbled lined paper . Brass studded design stylised floral and swirled design with stylised grapes to the front panel, the original owners initials R G to the top. Of handmade nailed construction , the bottom with front to back boards nailed up into the front and back. Underneath the bottom, along the front, back and sides the original battens forming a sledge to protect the chest during transportation , slightly curved lid originally designed to let rain water run off during transportation , Iron carrying handles , the original owners initials R G to the top. During the 17th century these chests were designed for the storage and transportation of treasured goods by stagecoach such as clothing, medical stores , books , musical instruments etc . Covered in high quality leather , making the chest water resistant . The decorative brass studs used for identification purposes with many carrying initials showing the high status of their owner .
