Large 18th Century Colonial Walnut Chest with Brass Fittings

About the Item

This impressive 18th-century walnut colonial coffer, also known as a blanket chest, features exceptional brass hardware and is constructed from solid pieces of walnut. The chest is designed with a hinged rectangular moulded lid that opens to reveal a clean, plain interior. The corners and sides are adorned with brass foliate-shaped mounts, while the front showcases a brass shield-shaped pierced foliate lockplate. Additionally, the coffer is equipped with brass carrying handles on the sides and is supported by later ebonized ball feet. Given its considerable size, this chest likely belonged to someone of high rank, such as a governor. The coffer was a highly valued piece of furniture. Initially, these chests were brought by ship staff and made from European wood. Over time, they were adapted with removable ball feet and repurposed as dressers for clothing in domestic interiors. This versatile piece would be ideal for enhancing the decor of a large room, positioned behind a sofa, in a hall, or on a stair landing. A stunning 18th century walnut Dutch armoire. The large angular crown with stepped moulding, above two tall solid cross banded panelled doors separated and flanked by pilaster columns with shaped mouldings to the base and carvings to the top. One key operates the locking right door and acts as a pull. The left door latches from the inside to keep it in place when closed. Just behind the doors are three shelves and two drawers. The base with a repeat shape as the top cornice. The whole is supported by 4 large bun feet. The detail continues with two cross banded panelled sides with soft curved corners.
