About the Item

Very rare large blanket chest, Italian trunk from the 18th century in wood covered in leather. On feet. Louis XV period. The core of the chest is made of wood covered in leather with a brass studded decoration. The date is thus studded: 1790. (17 C A 90). The trunk lid is curved. This chest, trunk is therefore a dome chest. This large 18th century leather chest with studded decoration has its original wrought iron lock and handles. Beautiful pair of hasp closures. Very beautiful patina of the leather. The back of the trunk is upholstered with an original fabric. The interior is made of burlap with its original ribbons. The interior is colorfully embroidered and studded. Some marks of time which give it all its beauty and historical character. This chest is a wonderful relic of Italian history. Similar French chest models exist. Until the end of the Renaissance, the chest was an essential and versatile piece of furniture, serving as a wardrobe (linen chest, dish chest, grain chest, etc.), a bench and luggage. It existed among the lord as well as among the bourgeois and peasants. Its initially flat lid bulged from the 17th century. In the 17th and 18th centuries, domed chests were essentially carriage chests or relay chests. The Pompadour carriage trunk (famous favorite of French King Louis XV) dating from the mid-18th century is a good example. It is both solid, richly decorated with studded floral motifs and closing with a very slightly domed lid. The use of studded leather on boxes, chests and trunks dates back to the Middle Ages. It ensures a certain waterproofing of the wooden structure and allows a more resistant decor than the use of paint.
