About the Item
WWII British Military Antique Wicker Pannier Basket Hamper
This original World War II mule pannier basket is constructed from wicker with a zinc-lined interior. The top is covered in waterproofed canvas, with “Saddlers” painted in white. It features a heavy-duty double metal clasp on the front, along with additional canvas securing straps. Two wooden batons are attached underneath, one of which is embossed with “ULWB.” The wicker on the basket retains its original green stain wash finish.
These baskets are scarce to find with both a zinc lining and in such good condition.
Large quantities of these wicker baskets were produced during both World Wars. In WWI, they were used with horses and mules, while in WWII, their use expanded to include drop baskets for parachutists.
