About the Item

A Victorian Gothic Revival quarter sawn oak breakfront bookcase in the Pugin style and attributable to Gillows of Lancaster. This super Arts & Crafts bookcase features crisply carved linenfold panels and Gothic brass handles and backplates. With a rounded moulded cornice and nine original adjustable shelves to the upper section, the stepped out base with three drawers above fielded panelled linenfold cupboard doors, with canted & notched edges and standing on a plinth base. Original Chubb & Son patent locks with serial numbers to a drawer and three doors and the linenfold carving being continued on to the sides being a further mark of quality. Overall this bookcase will house a run of 31ft 2in (9.5m) of books. In good condition with an attractive dark golden colour, some marks as should be expected for age and use including to the back edge of the plinth where it has had a skirting gap filled. No keys for the cupboards but the doors are opened and close via twist handles and catches. Please feel free to contact me with any questions or for more photos. The overall dimensions at the largest points are approximately Width - 70 7/8in (180cm) Depth - 18 1/2in (47cm) Height - 85in (216cm) The shelf dimensions are: Upper sides - 17 1/8in wide x 8 1/8in deep (43.5cm wide x 29.5cm deep) Upper centre - 28 1/8in wide x 11 1/8in deep (71.5cm wide x 28.2cm deep) Base sides - 17in wide x 11 5/8in deep (43cm wide x 29.5cm deep) Base centre - 28 3/8in wide x 15in deep (72cm wide x 38cm deep) For moving this bookcase is designed to be split into two sections with the the upper part lifting off the base. The top section should be screwed to the base when assembled.
