George I style burl walnut secretary desk with bookcase England, circa late 19th century with earlier components Item # 006YIJ27P An absolutely gorgeous secretary desk designed in the George I taste, it was probably executed during the last quarter of the 19th century but entirely by hand in such a way that would suggest a circa 1720s origin. The iron brad nails affixing the nearly blackened oxidized backboards, the authentic and early wormholes in drawer bottoms, the exquisite hand-cast brass hardware and every other treatment is suggestive of an early 18th century maker - but it is almost certainly not. The attention to detail is exquisite and the overall condition makes it such an enjoyable piece. The worn patina and deep polished shellac allow the burl walnut veneers to positively glow under correct lighting. With a shaped top over a pair of doors with twelve panes of glass separated by simple astragal moldings, the upper bookcase features two shelves that are adjustable using a toothed side system in the manner typical of the period. The desk below is accessed by lowering the fall-front onto a pair of thin lopers to reveal a tidy interior with six pigeon-hole letter slots and a pair of small drawers flanking a single prospect door. The drawers are beautifully hand-dovetailed with inordinately crisp pins to the front and back corners. An old and worn red leather writing surface is recessed into the fall-front. Two broad drawers rest in the body below this, one with a wonderful scalloped profile and both with crisp hand-dovetailing in the oxidized oak secondary woods. The desk rests over cabriole legs with intricate and precisely detailed carvings of shells, swirling foliage, opposing c-scrolls and dangling bell-flowers. These are notable for the well-developed hand that carved them, each carving integral and not applied. A very fine acquisition that is priced rather attractively due to its post-period production, it is not only a beautiful presentation piece but also a quite functional object for working out the bills and some loose storage. It is not overwhelming in dimensions, the relatively petite overall size allowing it to be a part of the room without detracting from it. Measurements: 75 5/8" H x 23 3/4" D x 34" W Condition report: Case appears to be late 19th century and crafted in such a way that it appears to be early 18th century, some components may be quite early and utilized in the design to make it appear earlier than it actually is. One glass pane cracked (but stable and does not need to be changed). Fabric of the interior torn and discolored, though still serviceable. Various veneer patches here and there throughout. Molding between bookcase doors with numerous replaced pieces. Previously electrified with lighting with old holes verso where components used to be affixed. Original pulls. Chip loss to the left side of bookcase (back lower corner). Old patching and filling to the veneer burl in the sides of the desk portion. Back of desk with a 1 1/2" strip of replaced vertical backboard. Lower right pull on bottom drawer missing backplate. No key and locks untested. Small chip to veneer of the lower edge of the fall-front desk lid. Back right leg with patch along inner edge.

A very fine secretary desk of diminutive proportions, this fabulous form features an upper bookcase with a cove-molded cornice over a pair of glazed doors with eight panels each, these divided with original astragal moldings, opening to reveal an adjustable three-shelf space bookcase. The doors are beautifully embellished with fluted pilasters boasting Ionic capitals that are exquisitely detailed with rich undercutting. The lower case features a brushing slide situated over five rows of graduated drawers, the second from the top cleverly fitted with a green baize writing surface that pushes back to reveal storage space beneath while the faceted glass inkwell bottles (one missing the lid) and double trough pen tray are situated along the right side. The timbers selected for the case are above reproach and present with a ruby hue throughout that is incredibly appealing, this finished under a glowing silky French polish to the mahogany veneers throughout.
