About the Item
Condition: Original Vintage Condition
Materials: Flame Mahogany, Patinated Brass Handles, Leather Surface Desktop, Original Glass
This English Georgian Sheraton style secretary bookcase, crafted circa 1900’s, beautifully revives the refined elegance of its late 18th-century inspiration. Constructed from rich flame mahogany with striking bookmatched veneers, it features satinwood inlaid keyhole escutcheons, original glass-panel doors with Gothic tracery, and patinated brass oval pulls. The upper cabinet opens to reveal adjustable shelving, while the lower section offers a pull-out writing surface with its original gilt-tooled leather inset and ample drawer storage below. The piece retains its original vintage condition, showcasing graceful proportions and quality craftsmanship characteristic of Sheraton revival furniture. Timeless in both form and function, it serves equally well as a writing desk and a sophisticated display cabinet.
Fun Historical Fact: The Sheraton style, named after English designer Thomas Sheraton, experienced a revival in the late 19th and early 20th centuries as antique-inspired craftsmanship became fashionable among Edwardian-era households. These revival pieces faithfully echoed the slender lines, neoclassical motifs, and delicate ornamentation of the originals, allowing new generations to enjoy the elegance of Georgian design without the scarcity and cost of true period antiques. Collectors today often prize these well-made revival works for their blend of historical style and enduring utility.
