About the Item

Wim Rietveld; Gerrit Rietveld; room divider; bookcase; industrial; shelving unit; industrial design; minimalist; functionality; simplicity; 1960s. Wim Rietveld industrial room divider. A stunning piece of furniture that not only adds a touch of style to any space but also serves a practical purpose. Designed for De Bijenkorf in 1960, this bookcase or room divider is a nod to the wooden bookcase created by Wim's father, Gerrit Rietveld, in the 1930s. The piece features a sleek and minimalistic design that is timeless in its elegance. The original black and white color palette adds to its modernist appeal, making it a perfect addition to any contemporary interior. Standing on its own, this versatile room divider can be used to create a separate area in a large room or simply to add a visual element to a space. Its vintage condition and unique patina acquired over time adds to its charm and character. Wim Rietveld was a Dutch industrial designer born in Utrecht in 1924, and the son of renowned architect and designer Gerrit Rietveld. He studied industrial design at the Royal Academy of Art in The Hague and began his career working for furniture manufacturer Gispen. In the 1950s, he joined Ahrend and designed a range of innovative office furniture that is still highly sought after today. Rietveld's work was characterized by its clean lines and functional design, which aimed to make good design accessible to the masses. His collaboration with De Bijenkorf department store saw the creation of several iconic pieces of furniture, including the industrial room divider. Despite his relatively short career, Wim Rietveld's impact on the world of design was significant, and his work remains an inspiration to designers and collectors alike.

This free-standing bookcase was originally designed by Wim Rietveld for the famous Dutch high-end department store De Bijenkorf in 1960. The clear structure of the shelf creates a striking design. All horizontal shelves are colored black and in contrast with the white vertical elements.
