About the Item

Dated to the late 19th century, this pair of tall book cabinets was once used in a scholars' studio or well-to-do home to store a collector's most cherished objects. Enclosed by a low railing, the upper shelf was used to display antiques, plants, and works of art, while the larger compartment below was used to store books and painted scrolls. Constructed with traditional mortise-and-tenon joinery, each square-corner cabinet features an open shelf, two drawers, and a lower compartment with two interior shelves. The exterior is colored by a red lacquer finish and accented by original brass hardware in the shape of butterflies, vases, and artemisia leaves. From the collection of Frances and Gary Comer. Additional dimensions: Open Shelf: 29"W x 17.5"D x 16"H Drawers: 13"W x 15.5"D x 3.5"H Interior shelves: 29"W x 16"D x 13"H.
