About the Item

A stunning example of postwar Italian design, this multifunctional wall-mounted cabinet attributed to Silvio Cavatorta showcases the refined geometry, material richness, and modular elegance that defined the work of Italy’s leading mid-century ateliers. Crafted from richly figured Italian rosewood and warm mahogany, the piece floats on sculptural truss-style legs and features a paneled back that supports a rhythmically composed arrangement of drawers and cabinets. At once architectural and expressive, the design includes a reeded drop-down bar, six drawers with sculpted pulls, three upper cabinets with recessed porthole-style windows, and four large lower cabinet doors—also reeded—providing generous storage while creating a dynamic visual interplay of texture and depth. Silvio Cavatorta, a noted Italian designer and manufacturer active from the late 1940s through the 1960s, was known for his collaborations with architects such as Luigi Caccia Dominioni and designers like Osvaldo Borsani. His workshop produced custom cabinetry and office furnishings characterized by precision joinery, luxe veneers, and engineering-minded construction. This cabinet—likely custom made—is exemplary of that ethos, combining expressive craftsmanship with functional flexibility. This type of wall unit would have been offered through high-end Milanese showrooms such as Altamira or Arform, or featured in interiors by architects like Gio Ponti or Ignazio Gardella. It suits both residential and professional spaces with its versatility and sculptural presence. A showstopping centerpiece for collectors of Italian modernism, ideal for living rooms, studies, or entryways seeking a dramatic blend of form and function. Attributed to: Silvio Cavatorta Origin: Italy, circa 1955 Materials: Rosewood, mahogany, brass Condition: Very good vintage condition; light wear consistent with age. some replaced hinges and some magnetic catches have been added as with shrinkage the doors weren't shutting perfectly.
