Antique Huge Canteen Silver Plated Cutlery Deakin & Sons

About the Item

This is a huge canteen comprising 136 pieces of cutlery by James Deakin & Sons, Sheffield. It is housed in its beautiful original antique, solid walnut and burr walnut, fully fitted cabinet. It has two beautifully fitted drawers with original lock and key, brass handles and fittings, dating from circa 1920. The cutlery is "Dubarry" pattern for 12 place settings and has nearly every possible accessory. The Dubarry pattern dates back to the early 1800s,the indented handles of this distinctive design were influenced by the craftsman Thomas Chippendale. James Deakin's goods were sold to Embassies, hotels, palaces and beautiful homes all over the world. This set consists of: 12 x table knives. 12 x table forks. 12 x starter knives. 12 x starter forks. 12 x butter knives. 12 x dessert spoons. 12 x soup spoons. 12 x cake spoons. 12 x coffee spoons. 12 x tea spoons. Six x table spoons. One x soup ladle. Two x sauce ladles. One x serving fish knife. One x serving Fish fork. Two x carving knives. Two x carving forks. One x carving steel. Condition: In excellent condition, the cabinet having been beautifully repolished in our workshops, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 83 x width 92 x depth 49. Dimensions in inches: Height 2 feet, 9 inches x width 3 feet, 0 inches x depth 1 foot, 7 inches. James Deakin & Sons. The firm was founded in Sheffield by James Deakin in 1866. The first mark was entered by the firm in the Sheffield Assay Office on 31 January 1878. It was a "JD" over "WD" and, possibly, represented the partnership of James Deakin and his son William Pitchford Deakin. The firm was active at Sidney Works, Matilda Street, Sheffield. In 1886 two further sons entered in the partnership, John Deakin and Albert Deakin, and the firm was then known as James Deakin & Sons. Further marks were entered in London Assay Office (1888) by William and John Deakin (subsidiary offices and showrooms at 48 Holborn Viaduct, London), Chester and Birmingham. Further offices and showrooms were opened at Gardiner House, 14 Charterhouse Street, London, 34 St. Enoch Square, Glasgow and 7 Queen Street, Belfast. After the retirement of James Deakin (1893) the business was continued by his sons William, John and Albert. In 1897 the firm was converted into a limited liability company under the style James Deakin & Sons Ltd. The firm was the proprietor of Shaw and Fisher, Electro-plate Manufacturers (established 1835) and of Walter Latham & Son, Sterling Silver & Electro-plate manufacturers (established 1874). To avoid any confusion with the production of another Sheffield manufacturer having the same initials JD&S (James Dixon & Sons) the firm used in its silverplate production a figural trade mark representing a 'desk bell' (often interpreted as a 'lamp'). Likewise, Dixon used a figural trade mark (registered in 1879) representing a 'bugle'. Walnut: The walnut woods are probably the most recognisable and popular of all the exotic woods, having been used in furniture making for many centuries. Walnut veneer was highly priced and the cost would reflect the ‘fanciness’ of the veneer – the more decorative, then the more expensive and desirable. Burr walnut (often referred to as burl walnut) were considered as the most attractive varieties of walnut. Burr walnut veneer was taken from the specific part of the tree where ‘growths’ sprouting smaller branches and/ or roots would occur. As these ‘growth’ areas were limited in both occurrence and size, larger veneers were hard to source and often on bigger furniture (tables, desks, bureaus, cabinets etc), these veneers would have to be carefully joined by matching up the pieces or blending them together.
