About the Item

19th-Century French Kingwood Jardinière with Sèvres-Style Plaque A finely crafted 19th-century French jardinière of kingwood, notable for its refined proportions and superb detailing. The top is inlaid with a hand-painted Sèvres-style porcelain plaque framed in pierced ormolu, depicting a vibrant floral spray on a bleu céleste ground. A gilt-bronze gallery runs the perimeter of the lid, flanked by two finely cast ormolu mounts in the form of foliate handles. The lid opens to reveal the original lead-lined interior, intended for use as a planter. The shaped body is mounted with elaborate ormolu appliqués, and the piece stands on four elegant cabriole legs terminating in foliate sabots, all embellished with gilt bronze mounts. This piece bears comparison with a bonheur-du-jour attributed to T.H. Filmer of 32 Berners Street, London, and is likely by the same maker, having been removed from the same London residence. Dimensions: Height: 77.5 cm Width: 63 cm Depth: 42 cm Condition: The jardinière presents well, with a rich colour and attractive patina. Structurally sound, and all ormolu mounts are present. Some minor wear to the surface commensurate with age, including a small loss to the veneered moulding at the rear and mild sun bleaching to the top. The lead lining shows oxidation and surface wear consistent with historic use. A decorative and functional piece, ideal for a refined interior or serious collection of 19th-century French furniture.
