About the Item
Petit, very decorative English gilt cabinet on stand, with an Italian 17th century poker-work interior featuring an intricate system of drawers, including numerous hidden ones. Reconfigured in the 19th century. The perfect jewelry cabinet.
The interior of the cabinet is indeed very intricate. Apart from the obvious drawers surrounding the middle compartment which can be taken out as a complete "box", there are several small drawers behind it, only accessible when the "box" is taken out, and the box itself has additional tiny drawers inset into it's back side.
The cabinet is a very decorative, intriguing and unusual piece, configured in the 19th Century by integrating the 17th century Italian Poker-Work cabinet with it's surprising "puzzle" of visible and hidden drawers into an opulent gilt cabinet on stand in the English design.
The piece offers surprise upon surprise, first , when opening it, to find the unexpected contrast of the earlier, beautifully decorated interior with its warm hues of brown within the exuberant gilt exterior; and then the discovery of all the hidden elements.
