Arts and Crafts Cabinet by Lamb of Manchester, England circa 1865

About the Item

An Exhibition quality Cabinet by Lamb of Manchester. Amboyna, ebonised, purplewood, fruitwood inlaid and parcel gilt decoration. After a design by Bruce Talbert. With incised and chip carved lozenge, line, lunette and stylised foliate decoration, the pair of central glazed panelled doors enclosing a gilt tooled leather lined interior with a twin panelled mirror inset back and one shelf, flanked by two triple raised panelled doors each incised and inlaid with geometric rosettes and stylised foliage within pearled surrounds, each enclosing a mahogany interior and one adjustable shelf, interspersed by engaged columns with chamfered angles. stamped: ‘LAMB, MANCHESTER, 33742’, approximately: 200 cm wide x 49 cm deep x 111 cm high, (78 1/2 in wide x 19 in deep x 43 1/2 in high) England Circa 1865. Footnotes: A related 1860s low cabinet by Gillow and Co, which has similar geometric decoration to the offered lot, sold Christie’s, London, 3 November 1999, 20th Century Decorative Arts, lot 39. As with the present example, the design of this comparable was attributed to Bruce Talbert, who was a champion of the so called ‘Geometric Gothic’ style which was at its peak in Britain during the 1860s and 1870s
