Biedermeier Germany cupboard/ Cabinet, ash wood

About the Item

One of a kind cupboard , cabinet or armoire of elegant lines, masterpiece of the bourgeois style of the first quarter of the nineteenth century emperor in Germany and Austria (1815-1848) known as Biedermeier. Its elegant structure, of straight lines, is made of ash wood veneer and ornamented with delicate curved lines, typical of the style to which it belongs, besides a pair of palmettes in the two upper corners, under the cornice that frames the structure. Interior divided by three balconies into four spaces. Keep the original lock and key. A very refined an beautiful timeless piece!!!! This style characterizes German and Austrian furniture from 1815 (Congress of Vienna) to 1848 (beginning of the revolutionary movements). Its main features are simplicity and functionality. As an origin, "Biedermeier" assumed, for the first time in this territory, a despective connotation. The word comes from "Bieder", or "simple" and "Meir", one of the most common German surnames at the time and was the name of a "simple" character in a comedy by Eichrodt. This term meant the conservative petty bourgeois, concerned only with his own family reality. Although derogatory, the term represents exactly the new socio-political situation in which the bourgeois is forced or resigned to abandon the aspirations of democracy and freedom. The center of life becomes, therefore, the home, which is no longer characterized by rampant luxury but by comfort and practicality. As a result, biedermeier furniture is functional, comfortable, and easy to obtain. The style is an evolution of the Empire Style towards greater simplification, without ornamental and outdated elements, lighter, linear and curved shapes, usually with lighter colors.
