About the Item

A late 17th century or early 18th century Baroque cabinet from Wallonia/Northern France. Solid oak with original patina. An impressive example of traditional furniture art that originally served as a linen cupboard or larder in a wealthy bourgeois household or possibly also in a monastery. Today, this unique piece is not only of art-historical value, but is also both practical and highly decorative when placed in a kitchen or dining room, for example. An exceptional piece of furniture for storing glasses, crockery, table linen, wine bottles and spirits. Made in the traditional gallery construction method, the side-moulded oak body has a front divided horizontally into 3 zones, consisting of 2 double doors and a centre section with 3 drawers. The four doors are hung on hand-forged external iron fittings. Their frames are heavily moulded and the flattened coffered panels in the corners are decorated with elaborate ornamental relief carvings. In the centre, a small drawer is flanked by 2 larger drawers. Their fronts are also moulded and have the original iron ring handles fitted. Behind both double doors is a shelf with hooks for locking the left-hand door leaf. When the doors are open, the two larger drawers can be locked by inserting 2 pins vertically into the holes provided in the horizontal crosspiece. The upper end is formed by the overlying cornice with coving profiles and carved ornamental friezes. The back wall is made in a frame and panelled construction and shows the historical traces of processing with a rough plane. Dimensions Height: 204 cm / 80.31 inch. Width: 152 cm /59.84 inch. Depth: 53 or 59 cm / 20.86 or 23.22 inch. Shelf depth: 40 cm / 15.74 inch. Shelf height: 35 (13.77 in.) or 32 cm (12.59 in.) and 30 (11.81 in.) or 31.5 cm (12.4 in.) Internal dimensions of the drawers: 8.5 cm (3.34 in) high, 13/ 39.5 cm (5.11/ 15.55 in.) wide, 39 cm (15.35 in) deep Good stable authentic condition with slight signs of age-related wear including discolouration and minor repairs. Old channels from woodworm (not active) present, particularly on the stud feet on the left (rear). The lower right door leaf has darkened more over the centuries. Minor damage to the rosette of one of the 3 original iron handles on the drawers and to the cornice. The locks are not original and the doors close with some pressure. Complete surface carefully cleaned without destroying the original patina and then polished with wax. The cabinet can be dismantled into several parts for transport (side panels with cleats, doors, drawers, back panels, horizontal crossbars, cornice, interior fittings) and reassembled by plugging and dowelling the wooden tenon joints together without screws.
