About the Item

Exceptional Genoese cabinet called stipo "a bambocci" from the Italian Renaissance in walnut from the end of the 16th century with its original base Museum quality piece Provenance: Genoa, Liguria, Italy. Period: Late 16th century Cabinets "a bambocci" appeared at the end of the 16th century around 1560 in Genoa replacing chests. Cabinets called "a bambocci" are decorated with sculptures of mythical and roman influences. This very beautiful example is composed of a lower part opening with two doors and two small drawers. It rests on a superb base with lion heads and pastes. The doors are decorated with arches with cherubs in the corners. We can find the same arches on its two sides which make us think of a Roman temple. The uprights are decorated with centurions and caryatids. The uprights and sides are decorated with sculptures, which is unusual and a sign of its exceptional quality. Finally, putti resting on horses support the flap. The upper part is composed of a secretary. Very beautiful work in burr walnut on the flap with also superb ironwork. The uprights are also decorated with carved figures on its face as well as on its sides. The upper cornice has two drawers and is also decorated with cherubs with in its center a medallion with three cherubs. The flap opens to reveal a superb interior which make us think at a Roman temple with in its center a centurion. It is composed of three doors and 7 drawers including 2 secret drawers. The center door opens to reveal 3 small drawers. Superb work on the three doors depicting miniature porticoes with a central figure surrounded by two smaller figures. The cabinet has reached us in exceptional condition and has an extraordinary patina.

16th Century Renaissance Two-Bodied Cabinet
Located in Saint-Ouen, FR
Former collection Altounian At the beginning of the reign of Henri II (1547-1559) the furniture’s ornamentation evolves. The few medieval motifs that were still used are eventually relinquished. Furniture becomes more sober showcasing moulded panels and perfect architecture. Cabinet-makers use ornaments such as curved fluted or plain columns, feather quills, roses or winged putti heads. High-relief carving becomes more scarce and compositions lighter. To that end cabinet-makers draw inspiration from Fontainebleau motifs filtering them and adapting them to French taste. During this period cabinet-makers turn into a kind of architects. Indeed the architectural balance of furniture is the centre of their concerns. The study of Antic formulas is then a necessity. From this care given to proportions appear refined cabinets with pure lines. This style is characteristic of the reign of Henri II and disappears soon after under the regency of Catherine de Medici (1560-1574) when an abundance of high and low-relief ornaments comes back on furnitures. This two-bodies cabinet...
