About the Item

Gorgeous Late Qing Dynasty Indochina side chest, early 20th century, with carved apron and sides. Combining utility and aesthetics, this late Qing Dynasty side chest effortlessly strikes a balance between classical artistry and practical design. Its versatility shines through, as it can function perfectly as a portable storage unit or as a side table, adapting to your needs and personal style. Crafted with meticulous detail, the tabletop features a richly carved elm wood cartouche depicting a rural Asian scene where a farmer pulls oxen to cross a river toward a village. All of this is filled with details rich in symbolism and auspicious qualities. The tondo or cartouche is framed by dragons, as are the sides of the chest, which are depicted as dragon heads. The front of the chest displays a beautiful carved garland of camellias. The intricate apron stands out, meticulously carved with Chinese calligraphy motifs and various geometric shapes, adding a layer of elegance and sophistication. The chest stands on four straight legs, whose slightly tapered lines culminate in distinctive claw-shaped ends, due to Western influence. A traditional design feature that enhances the table's visual appeal and was possibly made for export. A piece that adds a touch of historical richness to any setting. In essence, this late Qing Dynasty chest or occasional cabinet is more than just a functional piece of furniture. It is a style statement that brings the grandeur of the historical periods of China and Vietnam to contemporary living spaces, effortlessly blending past and present in its design.
