Small Cabinet in Boulle Marquetry, Napoleon III period – Mid-19th century

About the Item

A ladies' piece of furniture in Boulle marquetry, richly ornamented with bronze and brass inlays. This ebonized pearwood piece features a lower section with a table opening into a large drawer, topped with a writing tablet. A gilt and chiseled bronze rod follows the lines of the top. The flowing apron is decorated with a composition of brass threads and scrolls on a deep red tortoiseshell background. In the center, a large drawer is adorned with a large bronze door with musical attributes and a graceful bow, accompanied by an original lock in working condition and a later key. Above the drawer, a shelf is opened with a charming sculpted bronze knob. It slides open to reveal a wine-colored leather case with a blind stamp, a gilt stamp, and a central motif. The front and sides of this desk section are curved and concave. The table rests on four arched legs adorned at the top with a bronze drop depicting the bust of a baby surrounded by foliage and drapery. These legs have a richly ornamented front with scales and brass inlay. The edge is accompanied by a scalloped rush ending in a gilt bronze shoe. In addition, this charming cabinet features a top unit with two doors and two identical drawers. These are opened by a beautifully sculpted bronze handle and surround a coat of arms decorating the front. Above, the two doors are curved and chiseled with arabesques, interlacing, and brass scrolls. They attract attention with their gilt bronze frame and attractive color. Beautiful chiseled entrances accompany an original working lock and key. The central part, known as the cover plate, is gilt bronze festooned with leaves. On each side, the half-column uprights have: a floral macaron, beautiful floral falls and brass marquetry with scales in the middle. Finally, the upper part, reminiscent of a "gendarme's hat," is adorned with a bronze sculpture depicting a woman and children surrounded by flowers. The entire cabinet is decorated with wide gilt bronze gadroon moldings and is topped with two vases with Greek handles. The interior of this cabinet, back and sides, is made of mahogany. The same is true of the adjustable shelf on a rack. With its ideal dimensions, this Napoleon III cabinet will attract attention. It will bring character and beauty to your home. ******** Period: Mid-19th century Certificate of authenticity provided. Perfect condition after interior and exterior restoration in our workshop. Cabinet 19th Century, Napoleon III Period, Style Boulle
By André-Charles Boulle
Located in Warsaw, PL
This wooden cabinet is designed in the Boulle style. This style was very popular around the time of Napoleon III. The characteristic of this style is the use of small pieces of wood in furniture, inlaid designs with many different materials: precious wood, precious stones, enamel, ivory, seashells, metal, marble etc. In addition, to express the royal style, the "Boulle" style also uses a large amount of gilded copper on the furniture, such as tiger claw decoration, mirror border decoration, leaf decoration, etc. The main elementsof this cabinet is ebony and turtle shell, with decorative details and gilded legs. This is a pretty prominent highlight in the overall black and gold color scheme. Moreover, the head of a woman is in the middle of the cabinet with waves in her hair and grape vines could be representing the Greek goddes of spring Spring. Surrounding the head are beautiful acanthus motifs incorporated in every layer and surface of the cabinet. Symmetricallly on the left and right side of the head are two identical faces, with one being the lock of the cabinet where key goes. The four corners of the cabinet have blooming carnations to create a feeling of spring coming. The details are collaged, decorated with golden bronze leaves in a classic French style. On the edges of the cabinet are sculptures of two women wrapped around with cloth and leaves. Through it, the author highlights the beauty of the woman's status in the past. On the side panels of the cabinet is placed a gilded face of a man with wings...
