Sweep Cabinet in Black Walnut and Live Edged Butternut with Hand-Turned Legs

$3,850

About

Juxtaposition. Curve with angles. Dark with light. Mass with void. Strength in design lies in the ability to create opposition and tension without becoming incongruous. The central panel in this sustainably made cabinet is a single sweeping board of live edged, Pennsylvanian Butternut, while the sharper, geometric framing is in Butternut’s not-so-distant cousin Black Walnut. Raw edged Butternut meets planed and joined Black Walnut. Rich browns meet soft toffees. Wood meets thin air. A one of a kind piece, this cabinet is without hardware, using the natural voids around the sinuous Butternut board as a 'handle' for opening and closing the case piece. Each of the four Walnut legs is hand-turned, tapered and angled to position the cabinet hovering just above the ground. We feel this piece looks lovely filled with oversized art books, their colorful spines peeking out over top and underneath the warm curve of Butternut. Interior adjustable shelves can be added upon request. Every piece we design and build is made with sustainable wood with a unique story. From the Pennsylvanian woods of a multi-generational family managed property, we found both this lively, quixotic Butternut board—which would have always required placement in a specific and considered context in order to celebrate its shape and edges and hue—as well as the Walnut boards wrapping the case. The history of each tree is written into its grain; we choose to frame and display this history in clear, streamlined compositions. As this piece is an early design using composed, intentional negative space, a design gesture we have revisited and explored regularly over the years, it has traveled to a number of shows and galleries; please note that the photos show two small nicks in the Walnut case. If you require further details, please inquire. Furniture is both an aesthetic object and one that must fulfill its function, so the finishes we use reflect beauty and durability equally, without compromising a consciousness towards our environment. We believe the natural beauty of wood is best displayed without the application of stains. Layer by layer, we hand rub our clear tung oil based finishes into the wood. Our finishes preserve the natural color, luminance and touch of the wood grain. They provide a strong, low maintenance, ring-free and environmentally friendly surface. Our furniture is handcrafted from wood with unique, sustainable stories, shared through traditional joinery and a considered modern aesthetic. Each piece comes with a history of the tree and details of the design. While designed jointly by the two of us, Celia Gibson & Michael Moran, our woodwork, from turned legs to hand-cut joints, is built entirely by Michael in our Hudson Valley workshop. We are proud to say a donation is made to the Arbor Day Foundation for each piece of furniture we build; these donations plant trees and support educational programs.

About the Maker

Moran Woodworked Furniture

In operation since 2004, at Moran Woodworked Furniture we are committed to honoring the natural beauty of wood through traditional craftsmanship, the use of exclusively sustainable wood and a modern approach to design. We—Michael Moran and Celia Gibson—design and build each unique object one piece at a time, cutting every joint, chisel in hand, in our Hudson Valley, New York, home and workshop. From standing tree to finished furniture, our vision relies on an immersive, hands on participation through each considered part of the process. Our bespoke and limited edition furniture begins with the material we choose to work with: sustainable wood. Our wood tells a story, and its history—where it stood and why it came down—is written in its grain and marks an obligation for us to use it thoughtfully and to share each unique story. We know exactly where every single piece of wood in our workshop has come from, where it grew. A collaboration is at work: natural characteristics, idiosyncrasies of individual boards drive our design decisions just as our designs inform the wood we consider for a project. We intend that each functional, custom work of art is a composition brought to life by the judicious selection and placement of sustainable wood. This collaboration assures longevity by employing time-tested joinery meant to last generations, offering a flexibly over time in changing conditions. We hope our compositions reflect a sense of timelessness seen through a modern lens.
