About the Item

A beautifully constructed Japanese kitchen cabinet, known as a mizuya tansu, from the Taishō period, early 20th century. This tall and versatile chest is crafted in solid sugi (cedar) with a warm golden finish that brings out the richness of the wood grain. The upper and lower sections are fitted with sliding panel doors that open to generous storage compartments, flanked by a row of seven drawers — three larger drawers for utensils, linens, or dry goods, and four smaller ones for spices, papers, or tea implements. The central section features a striking pair of sliding doors with traditional open fretwork (shōji-style) — a charming detail that allowed for airflow in the original kitchen setting while keeping contents organized. The overall design is practical yet balanced, with thoughtful proportions and refined joinery that speak to the quality of Taishō-era cabinetry. Metalwork is understated: thin, pressed iron pulls with matching escutcheons, typical of the early 20th century, when hardware became more standardized. Ideal for use in a modern kitchen, pantry, or dining area as a statement piece with genuine character.
