About the Item
Very Fine 17th-Century William and Mary Period Marquetry Inlaid Oyster Walnut Chest of Drawers
This exquisite chest of drawers exemplifies the craftsmanship of the late 17th century, showcasing the artistry of the William and Mary period. It features a finely crafted moulded rectangular top inlaid with laburnum oyster, adorned with intricate scrolling foliage and flower heads. The chest of drawers includes two half-width drawers and three full-width graduated drawers, all displaying conforming marquetry inlaid ebony panels that enhance its elegance, and fitted with ornately cast brass scrolled drop handle and escutcheons, and it is raised on charming later bun feet.
Historically significant, this rare chest of drawers is made from walnut and exhibits excellent original condition. Crafted during the end of the 17th century, it reflects the influence of master Dutch cabinetmakers who were attracted to the English court, introducing sophisticated techniques that transformed English furniture design. The fine quality marquetry features stylized scrollwork constructed from various timbers, creating a stunning three-dimensional effect, while the chest boasts a deep glow and rich patination, showcasing plenty of variation in colour.
The top is beautifully inlaid with an opulent display of flowers, complemented by delicate marquetry and framed in a broad oval band of oyster veneers. This chest of drawers measures two over three drawers configuration and includes extensive laburnum wood oystering throughout, making it a very rare piece dating back to circa 1690.
