About the Item
From Tohoku area, Japan.
Mid-size, dark reddish brown Urushi lacquered Tansu chest of drawers.
Manufactured in Kaei 5 (1852), late Edo period, fully made of quality Kiri (Paulownia) solid wood.
Made with traditional wood joinery without metal fastener. Urushi lacquer remains in nice wabi sabi touch. The warm dark color with reddish hue comes from Urushi and the layers of other Japanese traditional techniques - persimmon tannin (kakishibu), burnt pine ink and slight amount of red ochre (Bengala).
There're the manufacture date written on the drawer bottom of the drawer no.3 (on upper right) together with manufacturer's info.
No.3 seemed to be for storing Fude (calligraphy brush), and No.2 seemed to be for the inkstone. These 2 drawers are relatively shallow than the other drawers in this Tansu because of this purpose.
