About the Item
A pair of mid size apothecary chest, medicine chest of drawers - "Kusuri dansu" in Japanese from Kanto area, Japan.
Dimensions of each units are same, can be used as vertically stacked & using separately, also can place side by side without a gap.
Product of late Edo era (1780s-1868), estimate from the style & conditions. Pieces of old paper labels are still remain.
The words on the paper labels show there used to be varieties of medicines stored, from Kanpo (Traditional Chinese herbal medicines) to close-to-modern medicines, for several generations.
Made of Kiri (Paulownia), known to its right weight, natural repellent & humidity resistance, Kiri is considered as an Ideal wood material for storing delicate materials.
It's still durable enough for actual use.
