About the Item
18th Century French Louis XVI Period Commode is a phenomenal example of the neoclassic revival that occurred after 1770 in France. Only select, finely grained old-growth indigenous white oak was employed for this piece, joined with pegged mortise & tenon construction. Straight, rectilinear architecture became the vogue, illustrated here in the tailored molding around the top of the rectangular casework, with matching subtle base trim below just above the tapered and singly-fluted legs. Each of the three drawers is designed around three molded circular forms perfectly spaced along the facade, with the center most containing the lock and cast bronze key guard with oval shape, laurel swags and flowing ribbon design. The same ribbon appears on the ring bale pulls flanking the center down both sides, with a wreath encircling a classic Grecian form holding a scepter and sphere, again cast in solid bronze. Drawers open to reveal substantial storage, and one can see the evidence of hand-hewn plank construction on the back side in the photos provided.
