About the Item
18th Century Portuguese D. João V Period Commode in Walnut
Origin: Portugal, circa 1730
Style: D. João V (Portuguese Baroque)
Materials: Solid walnut, chiseled gilt brass mounts
Dimensions: Height 94 cm (37 in); Width 124 cm (48.8 in); Depth 70 cm (27.6 in)
Description
A superb Portuguese Baroque commode, from the reign of King João V (1706–1750), crafted in richly grained solid walnut, exhibiting the full-bodied form and sculptural detail that define the style of early 18th-century Portuguese court furniture.
The bombe-shaped front features two short over three graduated long drawers, flanked by pronounced serpentine sides that enhance the cabinet’s voluptuous silhouette. The drawers are fitted with exquisite, original chiseled gilt-brass escutcheons and handles, finely worked with foliate and scroll motifs typical of the period’s metalwork.
The lower apron is scalloped and centered with a carved shell motif, a key decorative emblem of the João V style, which drew heavily on French Louis XIV influences while maintaining a distinctly Portuguese boldness. The piece stands on carved paw feet, adding a sense of grounded grandeur and strength to its baroque composition.
Condition
Excellent condition with rich patina to the walnut. Minor wear consistent with age and use. Structure is solid and drawers function smoothly.
Provenance
Likely produced in a Lisbon workshop circa 1730, this commode would have been part of the furnishings of a noble residence, reflecting the wealth and artistic patronage characteristic of the "Magnificent Century" of Portuguese Baroque under D. João V.
