19th Century Biedermeier Chest Of Drawers with Secretary Compartement, c. 1830

About the Item

Biedermeier Chest Of Drawers with Secretary Attachment Baden-Wuerttemberg Walnut Biedermeier around 1830 Dimensions: H x W x D: 118 x 118 x 61 cm Description: Three-drawer chest of drawers standing on block feet with a recessed secretary section. The two lower drawers are flanked by full columns, which visually support the upper, protruding drawer. The neatly mirrored walnut grain pattern runs from the front to the top panel and is reflected from there onto the sloping flap of the writing compartment. It is subtly interrupted by the inlaid key plates in the shape of coats of arms. If we open the flap, we see a writing and work surface protruding above the body of the unit. The solid cherry interior consists of six smaller drawers and an open compartment with an arched top. Worth knowing: The "sloping flap chest of drawers" furniture type originates from the 18th century tradition. At the time the piece of furniture on offer here was created, it had long since been replaced by the upright secretary or writing cabinet with a straight writing surface. Chests of drawers with a sloping top, so-called chest secretaries, usually originate from rural areas and are made entirely or partly from solid wood. The solid interior of this bureau also suggests that it was made in the countryside. The general design of the base of the chest of drawers and the striking grain pattern are typical of south-west Germany. Condition: Ready-to-live-in restored condition with a shellac hand polish. The drawers run smoothly, the locks work. You can find similarly designed pieces of furniture in the following specialised books: Rainer Haaff - Biedermeierwelten from p. 146 Wolfgang Eller - Biedermeier-Möbel from p. 184
