About the Item
This 19th century French Louis XV style commode has beautifully detailed multi-wood inlay marquetry, including a large floral design on the top, which is of note, as much of the commodes in this style have marble tops. The wood grain veneer on top, sides and drawer fronts is applied in a "four-way book-matched" pattern, and some of the marquetry motifs show the influence of French designer Jean Bérain, who popularized symmetrical decoration known as grotesques in the 1690s. The commode is embellished with rococo style bronze detailing, pulls, estucheons and corner caryatids. The commode has been professionally restored, correcting age-related faults in the veneer and marquetry. It is in beautiful overall condition.
The drawers slide easily, and the locks function well. The original key is included.
