About the Item
English walnut tall chest, has seven drawers and a crossbanded and ogee molded top with ribbed molding below. The frieze has blind fretwork which disguises a secret drawer which cannot be opened without opening the uppermost long drawer. This long drawer provides access to the upper three drawers which have secret wooden spring locks on the drawer bottoms. Access to the frieze drawer is acquired by unlocking any one of the three secret locks. The steel locks on the four long drawers are original but the handles and escutcheons are later. The drawer fronts have thumb nail molded edges and are crossbanded with barberpole inlay. The sides are chamfered, banded, and inlaid with barberpole inlay. The top three drawers do not open without opening the highest long drawer to access the secret drawer locks on the bottom of each of the 3 short drawers.
