About the Item

This exquisite William and Mary period chest of drawers, crafted in the late 17th century, showcases outstanding artistry in both form and material. The chest is constructed from richly patinated olivewood and exhibits the highly sought-after oyster veneering technique, a hallmark of fine English craftsmanship during this era. The intricate oyster veneering, created by slicing small sections of olivewood across the grain, produces mesmerizing circular patterns, enhancing the beauty of the wood's natural figure. The top of the chest features an elegant symmetrical design with scrolling inlaid marquetry in holly, creating a central rosette surrounded by swirling motifs. The chest comprises two short drawers over three full-length drawers, each finely lined in oak, banded in holly, and adorned with decorative brass escutcheons and bifurcated drop handles. The crossgrain ogee moulded base adds an elegant contour to the design and is supported by solid ash bun feet, a signature element of William and Mary furniture. The chest is incredibly well proportioned, visually beautiful, unusual and of very good colour and patination. Enquire for dimensions.

Located in Oxfordshire, United Kingdom
The Documented John Teague 18th Century Goncalo Alves Serpentine Chest of Drawers.
