Large Early 19th Century Walnut Chest of Drawers/Semainier

About the Item

A Splendid and Particularly Large Early 19th Century French Walnut Tall Chest of Drawers/Semainier. This fine piece dates from the French Empire period, or early 19th century, and has original ormolu handles with fine casting and chasing representing intertwined cornucopias of flowers. It appears to be have seven equally sized drawers but the bottom two drawer fronts are in fact one single deeper drawer. Flanked by columnar pilasters with leafy ormolu capitals and bases. The ebonised crocodile form front feet are also associated with the height of early 19th century fashion and the interest in all aspects of ancient Egypt brought about by Napoleon's conquest of the country and the resulting accounts of its treasures which made their way back to Europe. The piece is constructed in two sections meaning it is much easier to transport. It is veneered throughout in fine bookmatched walnut which has faded to a very attractive colour, curly veneers used for the drawer fronts and slightly straighter grained timber used for the sides. An unusual and high quality example.
