Late 18th Century French Louis XVI Period Walnut Sauteuse Chest, Nightstand

About the Item

This small scale late eighteenth century Louis XVI period commode or chest of drawers is referred to as a sauteuse in French, or jumping chest, due to its high legs. Constructed of solid walnut, this piece has two drawers of dovetail construction with fabric lined interiors. They are fitted with bronze squared drop handles and classic Louis XVI knotted ribbon escutcheons. Additional inset bronze trim outlines the drawer fronts. The cabinet has fluted corners and rests on tapered square legs finished with bronze sabots. Ideal for small-scale living, this piece would be ideal in an entryway or could be used as a nightstand. c. 1780.
