Pair of Baroque Dressers Naples Third Quarter 18th Century

About the Item

Pair of Neapolitan dressers from the Rococo period. Fully convex in form, that is, made with vertical and horizontal move, they are made with the inner hull in poplar and then panelled in four-part Bois de violette enriched with opposing vein borders, reserves on the drawers and poly-lobed rosette on the sides. The whole is played out by contrasting the marked grain of the same wood; even the pronounced edges of the uprights and the lash of the drawers are made of bois de violette worked head. The top has a splashback at the bottom of it for insertion to a wall paneling on which the tops rest, made of marble paved in a rare floral alabaster with Verona red marble borders. According to the canons of construction of the highest Neapolitan cabinetry, the drawers and top, are separated by a poplar diaphragm to limit access to dust. The feet are covered with bronze slippers that have lost their gilding. These applications, like the domed shape of the cabinets are very similar to the pair of dressers published by Alvar Gonzalez-Palacios , the only difference (other than the inlay decoration) being the apron on the front that is lowered with a double move on the front and with an asymmetrical movement in the sides. On the back transport label while under one of the tops is a paper label with wax lacquer marked "C Naples - 47 - Pignatelli." The pieces of furniture arrive with all evidence from an upscale context extrapolated from a paneling that must have lined the entire room in which they were placed; probably a study given the unusual and rare size of the two pieces of furniture. Furniture from this era, when made for important commissions, always had a choice of fine marbles, as can be verified on the specimens preserved at the Duca di Martina Museum in the Villa Floridiana in Naples. Restorations and minor shortcomings.
