About the Item
This is an old Japanese wooden drawer, likely made between 1868 and 1920, during the Meiji and Taisho periods. Crafted from light and warm cedar, the entire piece is crafted from cedar, from the top, sides, back, bottom, and even the interior of the drawer. The wood grain is simple yet beautiful, with a smooth texture carved into it by the years. The more you look at it, the more you appreciate it.
The metal fittings avoid gaudy ornamentation and feature a slender, understated design. The beauty of simplicity is the true essence of old Japanese furniture. These simple metal fittings further enhance the cedar grain. Originally used in a private home, likely for storing kimonos and other fabrics, the simple, peaceful lives of the people of that time are brought to mind every time you open and close the drawer.
The top bears traces of insect damage and small scratches, testament to the passage of time, but these are also part of the furniture's history. If you drape a piece of old cloth on top or place a vase or object on top, the traces will become a background, adding depth to the space.The drawers slide in and out smoothly.
