About the Item

This unique corner shelf desk with a cabinet, made by Azucena in 1979, is a remarkable piece of custom-made furniture that embodies the Italian manufacturer’s mastery of form, function, and material. Constructed from high-gloss dark green lacquered wood, this corner unit is a striking blend of modernist aesthetics and practicality. Its two offset surfaces create an intriguing visual dynamic, while the curved and asymmetrical shape adds an extra dimension of complexity to the design. The tops are deliberately non-parallel, which lends the piece a sculptural quality. The shelf unit is ingeniously designed to maximize both storage and workspace. Between the two upper surfaces is a single drawer, perfect for smaller items or documents, while the lower section features four large drawers housed within the cabinet. This ample storage space is complemented by a central door with a glass front, allowing for additional visible storage or display opportunities. The glass door enhances the sense of openness in the piece, balancing the solid lacquered wood surfaces with a touch of transparency and lightness. A particularly unique feature of this corner shelf desk is the built-in square white light, originally designed to view X-ray images, as it was owned by a doctor. This light, seamlessly integrated into the design, adds a layer of functionality that sets the piece apart. While this feature is no longer essential for most users, it stands as a fascinating detail that reflects the desk's original purpose, offering a glimpse into its history. The light can either be used as intended or left as a cool, decorative element that highlights the thoughtfulness behind the unit’s design. This corner shelf desk was custom-made to complement the SCR7 desk by Dominioni, which is available separately in another listing. Together, these pieces form a cohesive and harmonious workspace, though they are impressive standalone works of design. The craftsmanship and attention to detail are evident throughout, with smooth-operating drawers and a flawless lacquer finish that remains in fantastic original condition. There are no significant signs of wear beyond what would be expected from a piece of this age, making it an exceptionally well-preserved example of high-end Italian design from the late 20th century. This is for the corner cabinet only, the SCR7 desk can be purchased here.

Geraldo de Barros writing desk Unilabor Brazil 1956
By Geraldo de Barros, Unilabor
Located in Roosendaal, Noord Brabant
Very nice minimalistic small writing desk designed by Geraldo de Barros and manufactured by Unilabor, Brazil 1956. The desk is made up of three main parts. The black iron frame, rosewood finished top and the drawer cabinet. The drawer fronts have the characteristic white laminated finish with metal handles. Unilabor could use these same parts to create different furniture designs, following the company's standards. This approach was part of a methodical way of making things, and the design style was common to other factories of that time. The most unique idea was how they thought about the production process in an organised way. In very good condition with beautiful grain to the rosewood. The chair on the pictures is not included. Literature;  Brazilian Modern Design Alberto Vicente Marcelo Vasconcellos 2017, page 264-281 The most profound conceptual experience in the production of modern furniture in Brazil was led by Geraldo de Barros, a major artist of the Concrete Art movement in the country. Interested in new technologies and processes, Geraldo's career was consistently permeated with artistic experiments, particularly in photography and painting. His affiliation with design was influenced by the "gute form" principle advocated by Max Bill. Bill was the founder of the Ulm School...
