About the Item

This is a beautiful antique Welsh livery cupboard that was made sometime in the 18th century or late 17th century. The cupboard or cabinet is crafted of old growth oak and features a rich brown patina, with a deep gloss built only over generations of wear. The doors open to reveal a spacious interior with three fixed shelves. The upper part of the cabinet sits on a lower register, which was modified (cut down) at some point in the past, making the cupboard sit lower than similar examples. If desired, the top part can be separate from the bottom for a cleaner look. The top of the cabinet and back of the moulding feature delightful tool marks, evidence of the hand hewning that the original craftsman created. There is also evidence of worm rot, with damage to the feet, some of the moulding and other minor areas. There is also a piece of moulding missing from the lower register on the right side. Overall, the piece is in fair condition, with wear, damage and minor loss consistent with its age. The cabinet is very heavy and structurally sound.
