English Antique Narrow Court Cupboard Golden Oak Country House Hallway Cabinet

About the Item

A strikingly impressive, versatile and extremely rare, narrow antique Jacobean-style light oak Court Cupboard in wonderful condition. Made in England, most likely in the 1870s at the zenith of the Jacobean Revival period, this stunning storage piece will add superb bygone quality, gorgeous light oak colouring and a knockout aesthetic of late-Medieval Country House grandeur to any interior. Reassuringly heavy yet neat and narrow enough to fit into smaller spaces, this elegant court cupboard was traditionally crafted in light or Golden ‘Tiger’ oak, displaying super colouring and eye-catching tiger-stripe grain patterning throughout. A real rarity for its narrow size, the cupboard has plenty of storage, with shelving behind the three panelled doors and a good-sized drawer, making it the ideal hallway storage piece for winter warmers, keys and paraphernalia. The golden or light oak colouring is also a rarity, ranging from golden to chocolate brown in hue, depending on the lighting, Handcrafted using traditional Jacobean techniques, the more you look, the more there is to appreciate in the crafting of this beautiful piece: hidden plugged joints, chamfered edges, mitre joined bordering, fabulous panels to three sides, two double-plank iron-joined external flat display surfaces and excellent quality solid oak throughout – even the cupboards, drawer and back are oak-lined. You’d be hard pushed to get remotely similar workmanship today, even for several times the cost! Of particular note in the fine, traditional craftsmanship are the strikingly grand and fabulously turned baluster column supports, a feature of Jacobean furniture which really demonstrate the expertise in the crafting, as well as the gorgeously-aged, hammered ironwork hinges and door and drawer pulls. Court cupboards were one of the principal pieces of furniture in grand Jacobean houses, and as they contained most of the daily household items they were usually much wider and considerably deeper than this smaller and neat piece. All in all this is a really rather splendid and rare narrow Court Cupboard, which won’t fail to impress in any setting with its beautiful colouring, superior quality and overall aesthetic of outstanding bygone grandeur. CONDITION This is in very good antique condition. Structurally sound and sturdy, reassuringly and expertly crafted from superior quality oak throughout, this super court cupboard has only minor to-be-expected marks and wear to show its approximate 150 year age, which only adds to its fabulous antique look and appeal. It still has the circa 1930s Worcester antique dealer’s company plaque affixed to the oak-lined back. Overall it’s a standout storage item in wonderful condition and if well looked after it should be just as splendid for generations and centuries to come - please see the photos.
