About the Item
This charming mid-18th century English elm court cupboard, dating back to around 1757, is a remarkable piece that combines historical craftsmanship with aesthetic beauty. Its design and construction reflect the elegance and functionality of the period, making it a valuable addition to any collection or home setting.
This court cupboard stands out with its two-piece construction, featuring a top section with two doors and a sliding middle section. This is topped with a crisp moulded cornice and adorned with lovely turned droppers, adding to its visual appeal. The base is characteristically high-waisted and includes a two-door cupboard, providing practical storage. Raised and fielded panels on all sets of doors, complete with working locks and brass escutcheons. Wrought iron shaped hinges, which are not only functional but also add to the cupboard’s historical charm. The flat oak panelled sides with moulded detail to the frame and pinned construction speak to the meticulous craftsmanship of the era. The outstanding rich warm colour and patina of the elm wood reflect its well-preserved condition and add a sense of warmth and history to any space.
The carved date of 1757 on the top further enhances its historical significance, while the original planked back and panelled sides contribute to its authenticity. This court cupboard is not just a piece of furniture; it is a testament to the enduring quality and beauty of 18th-century English craftsmanship.

An 18th Century Oak Cupboard
Located in Flower Mound, TX
A splendid example of a 18th Century Georgian oak cupboard from around 1760. The exterior shell is genuine and untouched, with the interior have some modifications and improvements added through the years. The right side door opens to a compartment with hanging pegs and the bottom is open to a short drawer. The left hand side has the same pegging with later added shelving and brass latch. The bottom is closed with a full drawer. Cupboard does have a key. The coloring is absolutely beautiful.
Provenance: The Fulwood Collection
The Fulwood Collection comes from a Grade II listed rectory in the North of England. Formerly the childhood home of Sir Douglas Bader. The rectory was acquired by the late owner approximately 15 years ago. The house was formerly split into two separate houses, and with care he lovingly refurbished it back into a single house and refurnished in a blend of the Grand Tour style with Welsh and English provincial tastes. This property contained fine furniture, works of art, paintings, ceramics and other miscellaneous items some of which were purchased by “The Englishman’s Antiques”
