About the Item

An attractive Regency mahogany and satinwood ladies’ tambour writing table cabinet dating to c.1815. The rectangular cornice centred by an inlaid demi-navette pediment above a pair of crossbanded astragal glazed diamond pattern doors with glazed sides, the interior with cream coloured watered silk and a mirror back with single shelf. The writing table base with a tambour cylinder opening to reveal a satinwood and ebonised desk interior fitted with drawers and pigeon holes, ebonised inlay and reeded edge to the writing surface and with two short drawers below, all standing on square-section tapering legs. Good original colour, with a full length reeded brass moulding to the door and with working key, no key for the tambour but our locksmith may be able to cut a key if required. Some spotting around edges of mirror. This is a harder to find variation of the more usual ladies tambour desk and the quality shown confirms that manufacture of such pieces was restricted to the fine cabinetmakers of the period such as Gillows of Lancaster. The overall dimensions at the largest points are approximately Width - 36.625in (93cm) Depth - 26in (66cm) Height - 72.5in (184cm) Legroom - 25in (63.5cm) Dismantles into two sections for moving (cabinet lifts off the tambour base) Internal sizes Cabinet 33.625in wide x 9.875in deep x 11.75in high (upper) & 11.5in high (lower) (85.5cm x 25cm x 31.5/32.5cm) Writing surface 34.5in wide x 13.5in deep x 31.125in high (87.5cm x 34cm x 79cm) Ref: 0730
