About the Item

A rare and beautifully proportioned mid-19th century Sheraton plantation sec retary, this piece blends Southern charm with practical design. Crafted from richly figured mahogany, the desk features a bold rectangular form with a tall backsplash and turned legs that provide a sense of lightness and lift. The upper section is flanked by paneled cupboards on either side of a recessed writing surface, originally designed to offer privacy and focused workspace in a busy household or office. The writing surface is fitted with a later green tooled leather inset, framed by a sliding panel that lifts to reveal a deep interior well beneath—a clever and desirable feature commonly seen in plantation and campaign-style desks. The lower case includes two drawers fitted with their original brass pulls, offering additional storage for writing supplies. The backsplash has been replaced at some point in time, but blends well with the overall design. In nice antique condition with surface wear consistent with age and use, this desk offers both functionality and decorative appeal. It would make a striking addition to a home library, study, or entryway, and stands as a handsome example of 19th-century American furniture craftsmanship. 49h x 54w x 24d
