About the Item

An extremely Fine George III Regency writing table in rosewood. The top inset with the original tan colour hide, with in a pierced brass Greek-key gallery, the table fitted with two drawers, retaining their original handles and escutcheons, standing on lyre-shaped ends, supported by an arched stretcher and terminating in foliate brass castors. ? English, circa 1810 ? Measures; Width: 43" 110 cm Depth: 24" 60 cm Height: 30" 76 cm ? Provenance 19. St James Square 4th Duke of Cleveland (1803-1891) On the 4th Duke of Clevelands death in 1891, 19 St James Square passed to his cousin; 9th Baron Barnard. Henry de Vere Vane, 9th Baron Barnard (1854-1918) Christopher, 10th Baron Barnard, Raby Castle, Co. Durham; (1888 – 1964) By inheritance to his widow Sylvia, Dowager Lady Barnard; By descent to her Granddaughter Eirenice Gore-Booth, Lissadell, Ireland Thence to her Grandaughter. ? This elegant table relates to a small group of writing tables of this form, associated with the Regency cabinet-maker John McLean & Son of Upper Marylebone Street and Pancras Street, Tottenham Court Road. McLean supplied furniture to Carlton House for the Prince Regent; there are also documented examples at Saltram House, Devon. This group of almost identical Regency rosewood writing tables, all have the same brass gallery and distinctive anthemion escutcheons. McLeans work is characterised by the use of richly grained veneers highlighted by brass mounts and restrained neoclassical form. The use of gilt-lacquered brass mounts figures prominently in McLean's work. The particular detail of a star-form drawer pull also appears on a sofa table in rosewood by McLean, which is illustrated in S. Redburn, 'John Mclean and Son', Furniture History, 1978, vol.xiv, pl.41B. In addition, the use of rosewood veneers, which provide a strong contrast to the gilt highlights, and the fine construction are other features which support an attribution to this workshop. ? One other example of this writing table, is in the Moller Collection at Thorncombe Park, Surrey, and is also attributed to McLean, Another was in the collection of Hon. This table was made for the 4th Duke of Cleveland, almost certainly by John McLean & Son, and was recorded as part of the inventory at his London residence, 19 St James Square. On his death in 1891, 19 St James Square was passed to his cousin 9th Baron Barnard where the table remained in the Barnard Family until the present.
