About the Item

Small antique dressing table Paris Mahogany on oak Directoire around 1800 Dimensions: H x W x D: 113 x 58 x 43 cm Description: In an issue of the famous Parisian fashion magazine "La Mésangèr, Journal des Dames et des Modes" published around 1800, a small piece of furniture known as a "Toilette d'homme" is illustrated, which corresponds in every detail to the dressing table presented here and possibly served as a model for it. Above a narrow three-tier chest of drawers on turned legs is an open compartment for storing various utensils such as perfume bottles, tins etc. To protect the wood from moisture, a white-veined light grey marble slab is set into the top of the chest of drawers. Another marble slab, supported by two columns and the back wall of the open compartment, forms the top. To make it more difficult for toiletries to fall off, the lower marble top is framed by a raised wooden frame, while the upper top is recessed in the surface so that a raised surrounding profile fulfils this purpose. If the cover plate is pulled forwards slightly, a swivelling mirror concealed in the rear wall can be pulled upwards and automatically clicks into place. Two narrow drawers that can be pulled out to the left and right under the marble top provide additional storage space. The legs are fitted with castors so that the furniture can be moved easily for use. The back panel is also veneered and polished so that it can be positioned anywhere in the room. Like the furniture from the Mésangère, this version is also veneered with lively "Pommelé" mahogany in the surfaces, which are edged with brass mouldings. The frames are covered with a calmer mahogany veneer. Brass channelling is set into the corner studs of the chest of drawers and the columns of the open compartment. Condition: Refurbished condition suitable for everyday use. The brass has been cleaned and the light patina lightly polished with shellac.
