Rare and Handsome Chest or Dresser by Donald Deskey for Luce Furniture Company

About the Item

Here is a very handsome chest of drawers by the great American designer, Donald Deskey. Produced in Grand Rapids, Michigan by Luce Furniture Company around 1935, the dresser features a two-door upper cabinet with bakelite handles that open to reveal three drawers. The lower portion of the dresser features three dovetail-constructed drawers with horizontal bakelite handles. The stunning dresser is made of light and dark mahogany with cream-colored lacquer trim. The finish appears to be original and all in all, the dresser is in good vintage condition with wear consistent with age and use. There have been some minor professional touch-ups that enhance the dresser's appearance. An example of this dresser is in the Grand Rapids Public Museum. Donald Deskey was an artist and a pioneer in the field of industrial design and the decorative arts. In Paris, he attended the 1925 Exposition Internationale des Arts Décoratifs et Industriels Modernes, which influenced his approach to design. He established a design consulting firm in New York City, and later the firm of Deskey-Vollmer (in partnership with Phillip Vollmer) which specialized in furniture and textile design. In addition to designing for Luce in Grand Rapids, he also designed a modern line of furniture for Widdicomb in the 1930's. He's perhaps best known for designing the interior of Radio City Music Hall in 1932.
