Very Small 18th Century Oak Potboard Dresser

About the Item

A Charming Mid 18th Century Oak Dresser Base, Or Georgian Sideboard, Of Rare Small Proportions, Retaining Rich Colour And Patina Throughout, Having Rectangular Plank Top Over Two Drawers With Replacement Old Brass Plate Handles And Elegant Shaped Frieze, Raised On Square Upright Supports With Potboard Shelf Below. As the name suggests the original purpose of a potboard shelf was to store all manner of pots and pans. These pots and pans were often still wet, very heavy, or possibly still hot when placed back onto the storage shelf and this is the reason that we regularly find potboard shelves damaged beyond repair, or in rather ugly condition visually. No such problem with this particular piece however, it has a perfectly functioning and attractive potboard shelf. The dresser base is a lovely sweet size, one of the smallest we have managed to find, whilst at the same time being perfect for a wide ranging variety of spaces around the home, due to its narrow proportions amongst other things. It is also of course incredibly elegant and retains a quite beautiful colour and patina which is a consequence of years and years of hard graft and use, combined with love and care. There is very little damage to speak of, certainly nothing visually unappealing, or which causes a structural problem and although the brass handles are replacements they look more than acceptable and actually sit very nicely on the piece indeed. They have clearly been in situ for a very long time. As with all items which we offer for sale this dresser base has been inspected and attended to in our workshops by our trained antique furniture restorers, where it has recieved a natural wax polish to ensure it is ready for immediate placement within the home environment. Although there has always been a large amount of discussion and conjecture as to the original purpose of antique miniature furniture it will be almost impossoble for a definitive answer to be given for by far the majority of surviving pieces. The two well known and accepted purposes were either as an apprentice piece, meaning that the item may well have been made by a hopeful young man looking to secure himself a job at the local cabinet making workshop and using the piece as an audition for entry, or alternatively as a travelling salesmans sample piece where scale models of the full size items which a workshop could produce were created, allowing the salesman to take them away and use them for taking orders. We believe that this wonderful little antique miniature chest...
