About the Item

Portuguese D. Maria I Period Inlaid Rosewood Desk Drawer, Late 18th Century Origin: Portugal Date: Circa 1780 Style: D. Maria I (Portuguese Neoclassical / Late Baroque Transition) Materials: Pau-santo (rosewood), pau-rosa, pau-cetim, casquinha (marquetry woods); gilt bronze Dimensions: Height 17.5 cm (6.9 in); Width 47 cm (18.5 in); Depth 26 cm (10.2 in) Description An exquisite Portuguese late 18th-century drawer unit, from the D. Maria I period, showcasing exceptional marquetry craftsmanship and elegant proportions. Likely a component from a larger escritoire or bureau, the piece is crafted from richly toned pau-santo (rosewood) and adorned with intricate floral inlays in pau-rosa, pau-cetim, and casquinha, arranged in rhythmic neoclassical motifs. The front features three ornate gilt bronze escutcheons with pierced scrollwork and drop pendants, complementing the warm hues and graphic rhythm of the exotic wood veneers. The top is similarly marqueted with a central medallion framed by foliate scrolls, displaying the influence of both Rococo fluidity and early Neoclassical symmetry characteristic of the D. Maria I era. This drawer represents the height of Portuguese cabinetmaking during the second half of the 18th century, when imported tropical timbers and lavish decoration were combined with refined construction and ornamentation intended for aristocratic interiors. Condition Excellent antique condition. Marquetry is intact and vibrant. Minor age-appropriate surface wear. Gilt bronze hardware retains original patina and detailing. Structurally sound. Notes A rare standalone survival of a finely inlaid component, this piece would appeal to collectors of Portuguese furniture and decorative arts, or serve as a striking objet d’art or tabletop cabinet in its own right.
