19th Century Federal Stained Cherry Candlestand
About the Item
19th Century Federal Stained Cherry Candlestand
The warm, reddish-brown finish on the wood suggests it may be cherry, common choices during that period. The table features a simple, elegant pedestal base with three curved legs that splay outward for stability. The top was originally a tilt top but has later been adjusted to this permanent position.
The table's plain, unadorned surfaces, turned pedestal, and splayed legs point to an American Colonial or early Federal style.
Condition: Visible repaired age crack and further smaller age cracks scattered across the top. Scuffing, nicks and stains on the top and chips to the edges. Probably formerly a tilt-top; signs of a latch on the underside. Metal braces added later. Baluster reattached with visible dried glue. Structurally sound. In generally good condition. Split to top visible in photos. Wear consistent with age and use.
